Norwegian Forest Cat was always wandering around farms and estates of Norway and it was considered as ordinary house cat.
Breed standard was created in the 60s of the last century in Norway by tomcat who represented the ideal of Norwegian Forest Cat. Tomcat called Pan's Truls who had black tigrine coat with white spots became the prototype of the breed...
The body is well-bulit, robust with strong muscles. The weight is ranged from 3 to 9 kilograms (cat averagely weights from 4 to 5 kg; tomcat from 7 to 9). Tomcat/cat can grow to its final size up to three years.
It has long legs, the back legs are little bit longer than the front ones. Feet are wide and round. The tail is visibly bushy haired with minimum length to its shoulders – ideal length is to its neck. In a winter season the coat grows longer and thicker so it creates „Trousers“ on back legs and „Collar“ on chest. The neck is long and mascular. Head is formed in triangle with long and straight profile with sharp features which make a cat look like it's always watchful. The triangular shape of head is extending inner contour of ears. Ears are spiky shaped with lynx bristles, widely pitched with long hairs inside. Norwegian Forest Cat has strong chin with big, rounded and slightly obliquely pitched eyes. Its eye color should be in tune with its coat color.
Single-colored coat is allowed only in natural colors such as creamy, red, tortioshell (tortie), black, blue and blue tortioshell. Cinnamon, blonde, chocolate, and lilac color are considered as defect...There can be three kinds of drawing and it's tigrine, marbled and spotted. Coat treatment is easy, only thing needed is to comb coat once a week. Softer type of coat needs to be combed every two or three days, or be trimed regularly because it's more prone to burl especially behind the ears, on belly and on „Trousers“ in winter season.
Flaws which are considered as a defect on cat shows: too delicate physique, small ears, dry hairs, short tail...unauthorized coat color...
